I have often noted over the years that even the staunchest of grown up “eat healthy and get into shape” resolutions seem unable to withstand the siren song of ice cream. Perhaps it is the yearning to re-create happy childhood memories, so often accompanied by dripping ice cream cones, which produces such compelling cravings.
Growing up in Berkeley, my favorite ice cream flavor was Neapolitan, offering stripes of chocolate, strawberry and vanilla all in one rectangular-shaped paper carton. My older brother always wanted the chocolate part, and he usually got it.
We and our ice cream options have become much more sophisticated since those days, perhaps nowhere more so than here in the Bay Area. World class dairy and the bounty of locally grown fruits, vegetables, herbs and even distilled spirits, combine to take America’s favorite frozen confection to new heights.
We suggest using this “road map” to local scoop shops in Marin, Napa and Sonoma counties to make your own sweet memories this summer.
