A Fresh Start

Fresh Starts graduates prepare for a chef event

Culinary students cook toward a solid future

For 51 years, Homeward Bound of Marin has created a rare space in the North Bay where shelter and second chances share the same roof—and sometimes the same cutting board.

The centerpiece of that mission started 25 years ago with the Fresh Starts Culinary Academy, an 11-week program that trains people experiencing homelessness and other employment barriers for careers in the food industry.

Launched in the New Beginnings Center in Novato in the 1990s, the program has grown from a 900-square-foot shelter kitchen to an American Culinary Federation–approved training program and, most recently, to a full commercial kitchen and culinary garden.

A public class in the Community Teaching Kitchen

Over 11 weeks, Fresh Starts students learn core culinary skills—knife work, food safety, cooking techniques—alongside teamwork, time management, and kitchen operations. Just as importantly, they build confidence and a clear pathway to employment. Graduates receive job placement support with restaurants and food businesses across the region.

The impact is twofold: Local restaurants gain a steady pipeline of trained entry-level workers, while graduates gain stability and access to longterm opportunities in the hospitality industry.

To help support the Fresh Starts program, Homeward Bound recently completed a stateof- the-art culinary classroom in the new Gilardi Training & Events Center. The Community Teaching Kitchen offers classes for the general public led by local chefs. Participants can gain a diverse set of new skills or refine the ones they already have, from working with sourdough to making fresh jam to pairing beer and cheese.

The Key Room, an onsite event venue, hosts Fresh Starts Chef Events with curated menus and recipe demonstrations from renowned local chefs such as Darryl Bell of Stateline Road Smokehouse, Heidi Krahling of Insalata’s, Nick Ronan of Brigitte Bistro and Rogelio Garcia, formerly at Auro.

Whether guests enjoy a chef presentation or get hands-on in the kitchen, their participation supports pathways to success for Fresh Starts graduates.
