Summer 2020 Issue

It feels like a lifetime ago that I wrote the editor’s letter for our Spring issue. In some ways, it was. Since then, much has been lost, much has changed—and there’s plenty more to come—but some things remain steadfast, and many are even more greatly appreciated and savored.

Before I launched Edible Marin & Wine Country almost 12 years ago, some warned me that “print is dead.” I will be eternally grateful that I did not listen to them. The response of our community of contributors, readers and advertising partners to the first 45 issues of this print (and digital!) magazine have proved the naysayers wrong. In fact, one of the silver linings of this unprecedented time in our lives has been a renewed understanding and appreciation of our local food- and drink-shed, and the many small businesses that make up the vibrant and rich fabric of our region.

I am thrilled and honored (and more than a bit relieved) to be able to share this Summer 2020 11th anniversary issue with you. Inside you’ll find an extremely interesting article that unveils varying opinions held by some of the pioneers of Wine Country on the potential effects of climate change on their industry. Spoiler alert: They’re all planting for it. You’ll also discover our “get up off the couch and get out there”—worthy trail map of where to eat and drink along the SMART train route. Sarah Henry’s “The Great Pandemic Pivot of 2020” is an at the same time gut wrenching and inspiring window into the lives of members of our local food community who are doing the essential work of keeping the rest of us fed while we shelterin-place and practice physical distancing. These individuals and businesses have made seismic shifts over the last few months to stay in business and—in many, many cases—to help others during this time. Their stories are sure to make you grateful that you live amongst them. I know I am.
