Winter 2022 Issue
Welcome to winter!
After a little over a year of feeling back to normal (whatever that is… ) in terms of the ability to gather without fear of contracting, or spreading, a sometimes-deadly virus, to travel without donning a hazmat suit and even to frequent local restaurants, farmers’ markets and other community spaces and exchange smiles with strangers, I suppose I am ready for the “slow down” that this season allows.
It was the extended conversations that I began to have with farmers in our area when I was the leader of the Marin County convivium of Slow Food many years ago that awakened me fully to the profound value of these darker months—for the land, and for the people who work it. The ancient rhythms of a time to sow, a time to reap, and a time to go deep, rest and replenish are essential ingredients for a sustainable farm—and life.
If you are reading this, it means that you have carved out at least a bit of time for yourself to slow down and practice the ancient pleasure of, well, reading. Well done! You are going to be richly rewarded by the meaningful, educational and enjoyable articles, beautiful images and delicious recipes in this issue. Get cozy and dive in!
Happy holidays and every good wish to you and yours for the new year! GT
